Publication fund for open access publications  [15.01.25]

Since August 1, 2024, the university has had its own funds to support open access publications, which can be applied for via an online application at KIM.

As part of the Open Science Guideline, the University of Hohenheim has clearly committed itself to the principles of Open Access (OA) and has set itself the goal of promoting free access to scientific publications by participating in publishing contracts with OA publication components and by covering OA publication costs via a publication fund.

On July 23, 2024, the rectorate decided to set up an OA publication fund from the university's own resources as of August 1, 2024. The conceptual draft was developed by the SKF and discussed in the senate. Among other things, structural funds and the funds for the previous reporting bonus for publications, which will be discontinued from 2025, were used for financing.

Peer-reviewed journal articles are eligible for funding, as are monographs (excluding dissertations) published by an established publisher.

Funding is available for both OA hybrid and OA gold articles, with 85% of the article processing charge (APC) covered, up to a maximum of €1,500 gross per article. For monographs, up to €2,000 gross per publication is available. For publications in so-called “top journals”, the costs will be covered up to a maximum of €4,000 gross. However, the author must always pay 15% of the APC. The decisive requirement is that the publishing author is linked to the University of Hohenheim as the corresponding or responsible corresponding author.

The funds are managed by the KIM, which is responsible for processing the publication fund and handling funding applications. The KIM has summarized all important information (funding criteria, conditions, etc.) and contact details on its homepage. An online form is available for applications.

With this milestone, the university is consistently pursuing the path of open and transparent scientific research in Hohenheim.
